Micheal Bell-Smith and Chris Arcangel Response

Michael Bell-Smith’s appropriation on R. Kelly’s music videos was a very interesting take on how music videos can be sculpted in this day and age. The way Bell-Smith overlapped the videos and made each one a layer on this video canvas forced the viewer to search within the video to try and pick out the figures or some kind of story. It was also interesting how he played with the opacity of each layer and how some figures and scenes were more dominant than the other at different times. It was hard to listen to for one, it is a very bad collection of songs, and two it was very chaotic. I believe that the chaotic effect of the music is good companion to the chaos of the video and makes the video very successful.
Cory Arcangle’s piece was not as interesting to me as the music video but it did have some qualities that are very relatable to today. The way that he appropriated the video game to make it into an art piece is a very modern and interesting way of looking at a game people play everyday. It is also very interesting that he shares the way he did it and makes it accessible to anyone who wants to try it. He is making himself as an artist very accessible by letting people into his ways and trying to mass produce his works.
