Response 3 Richard Serra

Response 3: Television Delivers People and Boomerang-Richard Serra
When I first watched Television Delivers People by Richard Serra I was expecting to see more than just words on a blue background. After watching the film I began to think about what the writing meant and said. A few things really caught my attention. One being how much television affects our lives and also controls it. “You are the product of tv,” is one of the quotes that really stuck in my mind. I think the Richard Serra was trying to bring attention to the consumers of television that we really do not have control over what is being programmed and there is not ability to respond to it. The music that was playing in the background also caught my attention. The happy go lucky music was very contradicting to the intense and urgent messages in the video. This video in particular video make me feel like never watching tv again. I felt like I was being used and controlled by television programmers. It made me realize how so many of us plan our day around television, waiting for that season premier or new show to air, with out really realizing that we do.
The second video, Boomerang, was very different from the fist. This video seemed to be concentrated on the idea of feedback and how if affects the person watching or listening. The entire video is of a women talking and hearing her echo come back delay. She talks about how is effect is affecting her. She states that at times she has a hard time talking because her thought process is interrupted and altered by the echo, or boomerang effect. She also says that it makes her think slower, feel removed from herself, and that the place that she is satiated in feels removed from reality. Understanding the intent of this video was difficult for me. I believe it may have to do with the idea that by having feedback a person can alter their ideas and react to the situation. But with out feedback a person has no choice but to comply with what is given to them. An example of that would be programmed television. Both of these videos really concentrated on the idea of feedback and how it is related to television.
