Exchange?

Robert Morris’ “Exchange” was a very confusing video to follow. It opens to a black and white screen followed by a series of distorted statements. The narrator mentions the words “raw material,” which is what this video seems to be. It is filled with what seems to be random images and clips that keep replaying throughout the video. Some images look to be placed on top of others. One image, of a man lighting a cigar, plays an important role in this video but it is hard to tell what that role is due to the perplexity of the video. From what I believe, the narrator of the video talks about a series of works done with another artist whom he has a love interest for. Throughout the video we can sometimes hear a woman’s voice underneath the narrator’s voice. I think that this woman could be the person that the narrator mentions over and over again, but we never really get a clear listen to what she has to say. The commentary is very detailed in that it explains things one after the other, however, it is difficult to follow what the narrator has to say while looking at the random images that pop up. His same monotonous tone throughout the video does not help either. Because of all this, it is hard to understand exactly what the “exchange” is in this video. The video ends how it started, with distorted statements that leave the viewer confused.
