From start to finish, this video showed an act of violence. Although there was no striking or hitting, this was a very intense scene. The heavy breathing, the exertion, and the proximity of their faces all add up to a very frenzied feeling. The audience is kept in suspense as they worry whether it will degenerate into a more dangerous confrontation.
Strangely though, at some points it seemed like the woman was trying not to laugh. It made me wonder if they were play-acting. But like other people mentioned, I was also worried that at some point he would hit her. It was also interesting that the focus was on Dillon's head, and Acconci's face hardly ever appears.
The video also seemed to be showing some kind of game they were playing, and the rules are pretty clear, Dillon was to keep her eyes shut, and Acconci was to try to pry them open. Dillon apparently was not allowed to try to fend off Acconci, and could only act defensively.
It's clear that in this video Acconci wanted to physicalize the idea of "opening one's eyes" of someone who doesn't want to open one's eyes. Like Acconci's other works, it is uncomfortable to watch, and Acconci really attacks the boundaries of what we think is acceptable.
