Vito Acconci, Pryings
To me this video was just as disturbing as the pervious videos of Vito Acconci. This time he used a relationship of a between a man and a woman to evoke a different emotion. In this video Vito Acconci tries to open the eyes of Kathy Dillon. He pulls at her eyes lids and skin in attempt to open her eyes. When he is able to open her eyes to some extent, she would roll her eyes away so that only the whites would show. By doing this she never saw anything. I curious to know what, if there was anything, that Vito Acconci was trying to make her see. Was she trying to not look at him? The struggle that they both go through is the part that disturbs me the most. It seems like she is a lot of discomfort. It makes me wonder if she is in pain. There is little noise or talking. This silent violence makes a more dramatic effect. When I was watching it I could help but feel she should be yelling, calling out for help. A lot of the video was blurry; this made it difficult to see what exactly was going on. There was a lot of hand movement, and the two actors head and hair occupied the frame of the video. Vito Acconci uses the body as a form of medium. I think that the title, Pryings, plays an important role in the video. It seemed like Vito Acconci was trying to not only pry her eyes open, by maybe pry into her life and right to choose what she sees.
